Brief History of Shorinji Kempo
Shorinji Kempo was founded by So Doshin in 1947, just after WWII in Japan. So Doshin, or KAISO ("founder") had spent seventeen years in China before and during the war as an operative for the Japanese government. Due to the nature of his work, he came in to contact with many secret organizations, the members of whom taught him several Chinese martial arts. Through his contacts he also had the chance to visit the famous Shaolin Temple.
Shorinji Kempo was started in a small port town called Tadotsu, on the island of Shikoku in Japan. This is where the HONBU, or main headquarters are still located today. However, it can trace its roots back to the Shaolin Temple in China, from where it takes its name, and from India where the techniques it is based on originated.
For more information about So Doshin see the section on the history of Shorinji Kempo.
